Extremely resistant to decay, eastern white cedar furniture is a beautiful wood that accepts stain treatments well, or you can allow it to naturally weather to a fine gray patina.

Cedar is a dimensionally stable wood, especially when kiln-dried, meaning it lies flat and stays straight, resisting the natural tendency as with other wood species to crack, shrink or warp, splinter-resistant and providing aextremely smooth finish. Cedar also takes a stain well (as we will discuss a bit later) and reveals a rich character when stained. Cedar is one of the top ten preferred species for the home woodworker, and ranks third behind oak and pine as the wood most commonly used for ready-to-finish furniture. Additionally, cedar is uncommonly smooth-surfaced when sanded, making it more comfortable for outdoor furniture than other woods.

White cedar is used in landscaping, fencing, shingles, decks, log homes and for outdoor furniture, where its natural oils deter pests and mold. Adding an extra layer of protection (either stains, paints or polyurethanes) to cedar is smart insurance against possible premature wear. If you want protection and prefer not to see your outdoor furniture’s grain,paints provide a layer of color that will keep the wood safely hidden from the elements.

Staining will impregnated your wooden outdoor furniture with chemicals that inhibit UV light and water, insect damage and add a layer of color to the surface of the wood. Whereas paint completely covers the wood, stains can leave the wood grain visible. Although not necessary, you may also desire to put a polyurethane finish on the furniture after it has been stained. Polyurethane behaves similarly to paint as it covers the wood. Some prefer to add this extra layer, although doing so can make reapplying a fresh coat of stain in the future more difficult.

Build a Garden Bench

After you labor for hours planting, weeding, watering and waiting you are ready to sit and enjoy the garden you so carefully tended to. You can use a few pieces of scrap lumber, a well placed logs, or cinderblocks and an old plank for a place to sit, or you could build a bench. If you’re after that “rustic” look, then making a bench out of scraps, logs and old stuff should do just fine. If you’re looking for something a little more polished and eye-catching, then consider building it yourself and tweak the design as you like it. It only takes a few basic tools and a little time. The cost is minimal.

Instead of dragging one of those tacky lawn chairs from the shed or garage or sitting on the ground, consider taking on a weekend project of constructing your own garden bench. Thereare different varieties to suit your needs. There are also numerous types of wood to choose from. You could choose to stain your bench or add some character with paint or even a mural.

You can build your own garden bench very easily with very little help, unless you want it. If you have a formal garden and a need for something with an “air” about it, you may need to spend a little bit longer on the design and extra features. However, you are less concerned with impressing people and just want a basic bench for functionality, you could build something very classy and simple. You can produce a comfortable area for you and others to sit and enjoy your garden.

Acoustic Guitars – Laminated Wood Versus Solid Wood

A lot has transpired through the years in the debate over acoustic guitars in the area of laminate versus solid wood construction. It is not a inexpressive that the type of materials and craftsmanship sway the quality, durability, sound and price of acoustic guitars. However, there is probably no other conference bigger than this.

The quiz, that many players ask themselves is either a solid body is worth the price? Despite the great sound, they require care and quarterly maintenance to prevent cracking. When using laminated you run the risk that it will isolate over time. There is no clear talk to this quiz, and as long as there is a conference about acoustic guitars, it will always be at the forefront.

The debate – Uncut

Laminated is some pieces of wood glued together and solid body is exactly that, one piece. There are pros and cons to both kinds. It is a fact that laminate is known to furnish a ‘dead’ sound that does not withhold or scheme sound very well and the one-piece body is known for its richer tone. Laminate is more used because it is more durable and less sensitive to humidity and convert in temperature. A body that is made from one-piece timber is very sensitive to humidity and climate change. The top is like a toady that you can’t let dry out.

A Bit Of History

Years ago the debate was not about sound quality or durability, it was about price. The one piece timber body guitars were very costly so many musicians did not have a selection but to buy one made of laminate. A one piece is coveted because of its rich and gorgeous tone that only seems to become great over time. However, times have changed quite a bit in the world of laminate including the craftsmanship. great quality laminate is being used and more detailed craftsmanship has been applied so they are sounding great and great everyday.

It is clear why this debate is becoming less fantastic but the fact will always remain the same that a laminate will never be able to sound as good.

The Main Problem

When building a guitar you want the soundboard, great known as the top, to be as lightweight and strong as possible. Creating this ratio with laminate is often difficult because in order to make it strong it ends up too heavy. The wet glue used to procure the pieces of timber together can become to heavy when too much is used. Unfortunately, when too limited of the glue is used, the timber pulls apart. Recently new adhesives have been introduced that have helped to solve this question and ensure lightness. This is one of the ways that laminated building is becoming more beloved and competitive.

Necks, Sides & Backs

Acoustic laminate necks are very tasteless and widely accepted. This has become a beloved way to make the neck stronger. Hybrid guitars are also very common. Many models are made with one piece body tops and laminate sides and backs. The sound quality is 90% dependent on what the top is made of, so as long as the soundboard is one piece the rich sound will be present. This is also a great way to make solid body tops affordable.

How Do You Tell The Difference?

Depending on how dark the timber or stain is, telling the incompatibility in the middle of them can be a difficult task. First, you need to look at the inside edge of the sound hole on the top of the body. If the edge has a natural quit it is a one piece body and if it has two or more layers it is made of laminate. To decide what the back and sides are constructed with you need to first look at the back of the guitar. Next, look inside the sound hole at the same spot on the back and see if the wood grains are the same. If they are the same it is a whole body. You can do this same technique with the sides.

It’s a Wrap

Everyone’s view is different. Many believe that there is no need to buy an acoustic made of laminated timber when solid bodies are so affordable now. Others believe that the sound quality of laminate bodies on their own and in a hybrid model is comparable. Each private needs to evaluate the pros and cons of both, and decide what makes sense for them. For example if you tour often, perhaps it makes sense to purchase a laminate model for its durability. When buying there are always a lot of questions that need to be answered, this is just an additional one one.
